What is Mindful Self-Compassion?

Would you like to treat yourself with the same kindness you would a good friend if they are struggling?  This is the heart of mindful self compassion.  At times of difficulty, instead of ignoring your pain, you stop to ask “how can I support and care for myself in this moment?”.
Mindfulness helps you to be aware that you are struggling in some way.  Perhaps with difficult emotions or thoughts, relationship or work stresses.  Self compassion enables you to respond with understanding and kindness.
Self-compassion reduces self judgement and criticism.  We all have inadequacies and shortcomings.  Self compassion helps us to understand that this is part of being human.  We all want to be the best person we can and we are all unskillful at times.
Self compassion is about learning to accept yourself as you are; flaws and all.  This does not mean letting yourself ‘off the hook’ and becoming resigned to things as they are.  You may want to change in ways that allow you to be more healthy and happy.  Self compassion helps you to motivate change in a new way.  Not because you feel you are unacceptable as you are but because you care about yourself.

It provides the emotional strength and resilience needed to admit our shortcomings.  It helps us to motivate ourselves with kindness rather than shame and fear.  It supports us to forgive ourselves when needed.  And to relate wholeheartedly to others and be more authentically ourselves.
Research shows that mindful self compassion:
•  Enhances emotional well being & happiness
•  Boosts self confidence & life satisfaction
•  Enables creativity
•  Reduces stress, anxiety & depression
• Makes us less afraid of failure
